Getting Rid of Skunk Smells in the Home
A reader recently asked about getting rid of skunky smells...Here are the helpful replies from our readers! Thanks as always, you guys. :)
--------------
TOMATO JUICE
Sent in by Vicki:
"TRY POURING TOMATO JUICE ON THE SPOT. TOMATO JUICE WORKS ON PETS WHO HAVE BEEN SPRAYED ON BY SKUNKS SO WHY NOT HOUSES?"
BURY IT & TOMATO JUICE
Sent in by Bev:
"If it's shoes, bury them in soft dirt for a couple of days. If clothes & people, put 4 large cans of tomato juice, cheap brand ok, in warm bathwater. Let clothes set 24 hrs or more then wash as usual. You can also bath animals in it too. It worked for my husband."
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Dorina wrote:
" Acidic recipe:
A rinse made of a mixture of 2/3 water and 1/3 organic apple cider vinegar could work, too, but make sure not to get such acidic ingredients in the dog's eyes." (from www.care2.com/greenliving/deskunking-your-dog.html )
FABRIC SOFTENER
Dorina wrote:
"In the same care2 article, the comments section -- a poster noted she used diluted Downy fabric softener to get rid of the smell on her pet. While I don't know about using such a thing on my pet, I would try it in a spray bottle on my couch, carpet, etc."
VINEGAR
Dorina had one more brainwave...(lol)
"Hi again,
I just was reading articles on removing odors from homes and bam...there it was and I was amazed I didn't think of it myself especially since the other deskunker had it in it.
Vinegar!
Try placing vinegar in some bowls around the home overnight to remove the odor of the skunk in the house. It works on so many other odors and is natural and inexpensive...well worth trying.
Good luck!
Dorina"
BAKING SODA, PEROXIDE AND DOG SHAMPOO REMEDY
Submitted by Jane, "Mom to 6 Canine Boys"
"Mix together 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 pint peroxide and 1 teaspoon dog shampoo. Immediately poor on dog and let stand a few minutes before washing out. This works wonderfully."
Submitted by Joyce from Arkansas:
"This was posted in a sportsman magizine. To remove skunk odor, mix together one quart of peroxide, one cup of baking soda and a squirt of Dawn dishwashing liquid. This has to be mixed at the time of use, can not be mixed and stored. The dawn breaks down the skunk odor oils and the peroxide and baking soda foam it away."Labels: baking soda, cleaning, Dawn liquid, dogs, natural, odor removal, peroxide, pets, skunk
